Guam Airport Car Rental: Is the Counter Worth What It Adds?

Rental companies with counters inside the terminal pass the cost of operating at the airport on to you. On a weekend trip that is a few dollars. On a month-long stay it becomes real money.

Below, the same sedan is priced two ways — at an airport counter, and at an off-airport office a short taxi ride away in Tumon — for one week, one month and three months.

The two charges an airport counter adds

Airport concession recovery fee

about 11.11%

Often called an “airport tax”, but it is the company recovering what it pays the airport for its counter space. Because it is a percentage, it grows with every day you keep the car.

Customer Facility Charge

about $0.50 a day

A flat daily charge, not a percentage.

Names and amounts can differ between companies. Always read the itemized quote before you book.

1 week, 1 month, 3 months: what the difference adds up to

Reaching the off-airport office:
about $8, one time

taxi~$20 + tip~$3 − rebate$15 =net~$8

The $15 comes off your rental when you show the taxi receipt.
The ride back to the airport is free.

Example: an economy sedan at $33.99 a day, or $519.00 on the 30-day rate. Both sides are priced at the same base rate, so only the extras are compared.

Rates shown are for a pick-up tomorrow. The actual rate depends on your dates.

The longer you stay, the more an airport counter costs you

How to find the taxi stand at Guam airport

The taxi stand is right outside the arrivals hall. The only place people go wrong is the exit, so follow the map and photos below.

Follow the red dashed line from the automatic door to the taxi stand.
  1. 1

Turn left in the arrivals hall

Once through customs and the automatic door, walk left along the row of counters.

  2. 2

Leave by the “West Arrivals” exit

It is the exit at the left end of the hall (“West entrance” on the map) — not the east one.

  3. 3

The taxi stand is on your left

Look for the “Taxi” sign. Cabs wait there around the clock, and the official fare table is posted at the stand.

The ride takes about 10 minutes and costs around $20. Ask for a receipt — you need it for the $15 off.
